San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic

Once the richest place is the Dominican Republic because of the sugar industry peak in the first quarter of the 20th century, but nowadays that is just a memory since in 1998 San Pedro de Macoris was battered by Hurricane George.  This city was founded by Cubans in late 19th century and it still features some beautiful and interesting Victorian buildings such as the fire station and many mansions close to the Parque Central Duarte.  San Pedro is also known for being the home of world class baseball players and the beach Playa Boca del Soco where the River Soco meets in the ocean offering swimming in both salt and fresh water.
